THOMAS, Theodore, in full Christian Friedrich Theodore (1835-1905).
German-American, conductor, b. Esens, Germany. To U.S. (1845) and settled in New York; organized orchestra (1862); conducted symphony concerts in New York City and on tour; conductor, New York Philharmonic Orchestra (1877-78, 1880-91) and Chicago Symphony Orchestra (1891-1905). Exercised great influence on development of a knowledge and appreciation of symphonic music. |
