STRAUS, Isidor (1845-1912), German-American, merchant, born in Otterberg, Germany. His family immigrated in 1854 to the U.S., where he participated in the founding of a crockery firm, L. Straus
& Son, in 1865. He acquired ownership of the crockery and glassware department of the R. H. Macy department store in New York City in 1874. With his brotherNathan,
he became a partner in the Macy firm in 1888 and co-owner in 1896. He served as a member of the U.S. House of Representatives in 1894-95. He died in 1912 in the Titanic disaster. |
