PANOFSKY, Erwin (1892-1968).
German-American art historian, b. Hanover, Germany. Professor at Hamburg (1926-33) and Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton, N.J. (1935-68); among his many books on medieval and Renaissance art were Studies in Iconology (1939), Albrecht Dürer (1943), Gothic Architecture and Scholasticism (1951), Early Netherlandish Painting (1953), and Meaning in the Visual Arts (1955). |
