METZ, Christian (1794-1867). German-American religious leader, b. Neuwied, Prussia. Leader of sect known as Community of True Inspiration (from 1817); established communistic colony on site near Buffalo, N.Y. (1842-54); colony emigrated to Iowa frontier site, christened Amana (1855); community incorporated (1859) as Amana Society, with Metz as its head until his death.
