MERGENTHALER, Ottmar (1854-1899).
German-American inventor, b. Hachtel, Germany. To U.S. (1872, naturalized 1878). After many experiments, invented first Linotype typesetting machine (patented 1884); produced improved machine (1885) with automatic justification; later patented further improvements.
